While in London over the summer I found one of these little scooters that had been left out with the trash in a quiet neighbourhood. I decided to use it to scoot about London as it lit up (which was cool) and seemed to move quicker than a scooter of that size should do.
I was also able to take the handlebars off of it and practice my digeridoo skills and bang the end of the metal pipe like a strange little drum with a popping sound. By all accounts I found it just after my birthday and decided to accept it as a present from the universe and started to try and have fun with it while getting around quicker.

These little things move pretty fast, even with a grown adult on them. We tell the children to put safety helmets on but is the real danger with them falling off and hurting their head?
Firstly I question how much safer a helmet really is. Cutting off your hearing and covering your head, makes it more difficult to be aware of space and time while feeling limited and restricted by a helmet. It also gives children an illusionary sense of safety and without the helmet them may just jump off or fall more gracefully if something goes wrong.
As with everything I use I can't help thinking about who is the target market for these scooters, how much fun are they, how safe are they and what is actually happening to me and my body when I'm using it. I used it for about a week to get around London, maybe 2 weeks but it wasn't very long. After noticing that they seemed to travel much faster than you would expect I started to analyse the bottom of it. There are groves in the bottom at very selective places and I concluded that this is done to help air travel through the bottom in a certain way. This would create a sort of "air compression" in the moment while using the scooter, which is what we call gas or power. This then pushes the scooter along faster in the environment because of the speed it is taking air in and pushing it out the other side.

This is the best example I could find online. It's not exactly like mine was but it was very similar.
In my opinion the grooves in the bottom create air to flow under the scooter and help to push you along faster using air compression. Some of them are designed much better than this one underneath.
So after using one of these for a week I started to notice that my left foot (the main one I was using to scoot) was getting very sore. I tried to change feet but I wasn't as good at controlling the scooter using the other foot so I kept defaulting to using my left foot. Over time the sole of my foot grew sorer and sorer and living outside and being homeless I tend to keep my socks on for weeks without checking my feet so I just assumed I was doing too much. As it turns out I needed to go to the hospital after an attack by 4 lads in another neighbourhood. They smashed me over the head with a gas bottle (that they were likely sucking on before hand) and I had to go to the hospital to get it glued up. While I was there I decided to have a look at my foot also as there was quite a bit of pain coming from it that I was ignoring.
After closer examination it seemed that the wounding was like a burn! I tried to get the hospital to let me stay in a bit longer while it heeled and they didn't seem to even want to acknowledge it as a problem even though I was struggling to walk. I had gone in for another problem and the mindset of them helping me with my feet at the same time was too far for the average brainwashed doctor to jump to! Anyway the whole event started me thinking more about what had actually happened to the sole of my foot and how. I mentioned that this scooter is creating air compression underneath it to push it along faster which is how gas and in my opinion also how electricity is generated. Different levels of compressed air to generate a force or a power. I believe that my foot was shorting out on the pavement when I used the scooter. Every time I scooted it is essentially creating a little burn on my skin over and over again. I now always try to tell parents about this when I see a child on one of these scooters and at first the parent looks at me like a homeless nutter but after thinking about it, (I can see the process happening in their brain sometimes) they possibly conclude that it actually that makes a lot of sense!
