Working at the Public Library

Published on 5 August 2023 at 15:48

These is now my latest blog post because I am trying to get things done at the public Library in Central Cardiff again and it's just impossible and as with all libraries, I travel around just setup to be an IT nightmare and to make it almost impossible to get anything constructive done at all.  As with all the public libraries I use they all seem to use the same format and software to lock everything down and prevent you from doing anything of any use whatsoever.  You can't even spin the map around when you are looking on a google or Bing map to work out which way you are looking at the thing.

Why it's generally bad for your health, vibration and mental wellbeing to use the public library computers when you don't have access to a phone or a laptop.

The irony is that if you have these things, you wouldn't even bother with them!

As I ran my own IT business for a number of years and have worked in IT support for around 20 years in total, I am well aware of what is available to help people on a computer and what can be done to improve efficiency.  This is how I know that it really doesn't need to be this bad and the fact that it is, in my opinion is because it's all by design.  It's government manipulation to make sure nobody really uses them and uses their phones instead which ideally are linked to their own laptop, so we know who everyone is and what everyone is doing at all times.

You can't get most mainstream email accounts now without registering a phone number to prove your identity.  The AI algorithm will then call you to verify your identity and you need to push 1 or whatever to do so.  I've got so fed up with not being able to do anything of any value I asked the library staff, and they just say no.  We can't give out our individual external numbers even though some of the staff have one if not all of them (even if they don't know it).

I went and asked a helper today (I can tell which desks look like they know their external number) and she looked at me like shit before I even spoke.  When I did speak to her and asked, "does your phone have an external number" she replied "you're not allowed to use this phone".  "That's not what I asked I said".  It took an unbelievable amount of time and angry conversation from her end before I got her to answer the simple yes or no question.  Then I said, "now you could ask my why if you wanted to as it wasn't even for use."  When I told her the reason she still said no anyway!  It's just an automatic call where she has to press 1 or something...but she's very clever, likely wears a lanyard and likes to look down on anyone without a phone or a laptop.

There is no reason, from a security perspective or otherwise to not do this as I am clearly there in the library validating my identity in the moment.  So have all the staff been brainwashed to judge someone that doesn't want a phone and then project that they won't be clever enough to understand that saying no to what I'm asking for is completely pointless, keeps nobody safe and just irritates, frustrates, keeps people stuck and encourages the use of a mobile phone or should I say, "tracking device".

They'll soon be taking a picture of the lovely meal they enjoyed together...

It's all for your safety...

Safe and effective the best way to be, the perfect enslavement of humanity.

This is a lyric from one of my songs and it's surprising how often I find myself saying it over and over again in daily life.  If I were to speak to one of the "helpers" at the library who generally know nothing about IT on in infrastructure level, they will likely tell you that it's all locked down for your security and the security of others.  The computers boot you out every hour, I can't see any reason for this whatsoever and all it does is irritate and justify the need to go and speak to a helper to give them something to do which in turn justifies their job or possibly even existence.  There is no security reason for it other than someone may forget to log off and leave the computer open I suppose but you can set the policies to monitor for activity on the keyboard.  EG if nobody has touched the keyboard for 15 minutes and the machine isn't locked then log it off.  That's actually what they do when you lock it and go downstair for a cigarette!!  Which again, doesn't keep anyone secure and is incredibly annoying.

When you register for a library account, they give you your pin and if you ask to reset to a private one (which is standard industry practice when securing the use of a computer) they ask you for the new one and set it for you.  Any staff member can view anyone's password at any time and essentially log into any computer as them!!!  This is highly insecure and encourages illegal activity from a staff member that wants to do things anonymously or even set someone else up.  It's ok though because they have all been CRB checked, which essentially just means they haven't been caught yet!!

I mentioned this to a staff member now after having to get extra time as they only allow you 3 hours in this library which is 3 separate logins.  I didn't use my 3 hours anyway as it logged me off even though my machine was locked!  The staff always extend it anyway as the computers are never busy or overused because they are too frustrating to use, and most people have a phone and laptop anyway!  Just the way they want it.  Her response was, "well you can choose to do something else," to which I replied, "no I can't as I don't have a phone or a laptop and as a member of the public this is the only choice I have".  These are alleged "helpers" working at a big city center library calling it a central hub for growth and improvement.  They are rude, obnoxious, judgmental and frankly highly self-entitled.

That's 2 rude helpers in one day, although the 2nd one did say she would extend my time again if I wanted in a more friendly voice, so she's likely just been brainwashed, sorry I mean trained to speak aggressively and with authority in order to justify her status and wage.  The only direct help I got in the library today was from a volunteer who had a little desk right in the corner out of the way where she was serving free coffee and a chat.  It was lovely and we played a great game of chess.  It's funny how the best help is from the people that aren't being paid isn't it!  As I say work is supposed to be about helping people, but it rarely is.

When my daughter was just about old enough to talk, I used to ask her philosophical questions when I was stoned because her answer was amazing.  I once asked, "What's work mean to you Chloe" and she replied instantly without even thinking, "helping people".  I stuck with me and also made me realise that it really isn't the case anymore and 99% of jobs that exist are not helping anyone at all.  Well actually they are helping the worker to get more money to BUY STUFF.  Enjoy this video from George Carlin discussing the American Dream......Buying stuff.
